Arizona’s Roy Haught and Robert Cartright teamed up to win the Ariat World Series of Team Roping Title Fights (opens in a new tab) XI #10.5 at Rancho Rio (opens in a new tab) in Wickenburg, Arizona, on Feb. 12, 2021, from fourth callback.
Haught, 58, and Cartright, 68, who are long-time friends, roped four head in 39.57 seconds to win the Title Fights XI #10.5, adding $35,060 to their bank accounts.
“It’s great when you win it with a friend and somebody you know,” said Cartright, who worked as a plumber for 30 years retired on Jan. 1, 2021. “It’s not like getting in some pick and draw with someone you don’t know. This way we can appreciate it more.”
Haught and Cartright got the clock stopped in 10.60 seconds in the short round on a steer that got heavy on the end of the head rope.
“I could tell by how the way the steer was going to go off there, he was going to get heavy and get away from me, so I waited for that,” Cartright said. “When it happened, I got the separation on him and roped him.”
Cartright, who spent a month hosting yard sales, in order to enter the Title Fights XI, double dipped in the Title Fights XI #10.5 and placed fourth with Dale Whitlow with a time of 41.92 seconds on four head, worth $14,340.
“I was told that I could come to this roping if I made enough money at the yard sale,” Cartright said.
Haught was able to handle and pull four steers into Cartright’s heel loop on an 11-year-old gelding named Big Red.
“I’ve only had him a month and a half,” said Haught, who works as a contractor. “He does whatever I want him to do. He has no holes in him.”
Cartright heeled on his horse, Diesel, a 12-year-old gelding that wasn’t started until he was 8 years old.
“He was my wife’s lawn ornament,” Cartright laughed. “He was born at the house and we didn’t do anything with him. I sent him to Steve Sherwood for a while and then got him home and started roping and we’ve been going at it ever since.”
