While the PRCA (opens in a new tab) announced its plans to possibly move the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (opens in a new tab) from Las Vegas (opens in a new tab), the Ariat World Series of Team Roping plans to host its Finale in Vegas, as scheduled, with numbers on track to be even with the 2019 event.
In August, the South Point announced the cancelation of its Cinch Western Gift Show, but the World Series of Team Roping will still host its concourse-level show for all WSTR (opens in a new tab) sponsors and their booths to coincide with the Finale.
The Score: Season 3, Episode 20 with WSTR’s Connie Gentry (opens in a new tab)
“Given the COVID-19 situation in March, April and May, we would have expected all of our qualifiers to be down all year long, and the opposite is true,” said Connie Gentry (opens in a new tab), VP of Roping Operations. “Realistically, we believe, some of the first-time direct entries might be off a little in September/October based on the usual first-time Finale contestants who will not make the trek to Vegas without the rodeo in town. Time will tell, but it’s possible with the additional availability of direct entries we could see those teams, who are regular goers, get in one more time. Nobody really knows how this season will finish out, but we will keep you informed every step of the way.”

The Finale is considered a non-spectator event since the association does not sell tickets. While the Finale doesn’t draw many fans in the stands throughout the day, the short rounds have become “must-see” for the NFR (opens in a new tab)-goers and consistently have filled the stands from the Open to the #8.5. With the NFR gone and the Western Gift Show closed, the WSTR doesn’t anticipate short-round attendance to be an issue and will arrange seating to meet social distancing guidelines.
