Dr. Bronson K. Springstead, a respected equine veterinarian and cherished figure in the equestrian community, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2024, at the age of 88. Born on June 4, 1936, in Gallup, New Mexico, Dr. Springstead devoted his life to the health and care of horses, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of his clients and their beloved animals.
Born and raised in Gallup, New Mexico Bronson became an accomplished horseman at an early age. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955-1959 and attended Ft. Lewis College and finished pre-veterinary courses at Oklahoma State University where he met his wife, Karen. Dr. Springstead completed his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) from Colorado State University in 1967. His love for horses guided him toward a career in equine medicine. He opened and operated Zia Equine Center in Albuquerque, NM for over 30 years. Dr. Springstead's deep understanding of equine physiology, coupled with his intuitive, hands-on approach, earned him the trust and respect of horse owners, trainers, breeders and veterinary colleagues throughout the country and beyond.
Dr. Springstead was a pioneer in advancing equine medical care. His contributions included the development of innovative surgical techniques and equipment for arthroscopic procedures. He actively participated in research, and published articles in veterinary journals.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Springstead was a cherished husband, father, and community member. He was preceded to heaven by his mother, father, brother, and sister. He is survived by his wife Karen, and his children, Brandon (Jodi) Springstead of Albuquerque, NM; their children: Kirk and Bella Springstead and Leah (Fred) Fischer of Denver, CO; their children: Maximilian and Makenna Fischer and his brother Erroyl (Terry) Springstead (Colleen) of Oracle, AZ. He will be remembered for his ability to tell great stories, his good-timin' nature, and his loyalty to living the cowboy way.
A celebration of Dr. Springstead's life will be held at 10:00 AM on June 29, 2024, in Belen, NM, where friends and family are invited to gather and share memories.
