Gene Thomas Plant, 79, a long-time resident of Estancia, NM, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2024 in Albuquerque, NM. Gene was born on September 27,1944, in Albuquerque, NM. Gene chose to enlist in the Navy during the Vietnam War from 1967-1969. After his time in the Navy, he moved to Hunt, Arizona where he became a rancher and worked on farms, along with working on wells with his dad and brothers. Gene and his wife Ellensue moved to New Mexico in 2001, where he started his own well and pump business. Gene had many passions throughout his life, with horses being his biggest. Gene loved to train race horses with his parents and brothers, and they traveled all over the southwest racing their horses. Gene also loved to rope, winning the very first USTRC #6 roping in 1990 with his brother Keith, and continued to rope as he got older with his family and friends. Another passion he enjoyed later in life was meeting his buddies every morning at the local coffee shop in Estancia to talk horses and local news. Gene is preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Sue Plant, Grandson, Logan Thomas Plant, his Parents Joseph, and Rosamay (Lloyd) Plant and brother, Joseph Lloyd Plant. Gene is survived by his sons Clinton Plant (Melissa) and daughter Lynsey of Estancia, NM, Cody Plant (Marie) and sons Tyler, and Colton of Los Lunas, NM, brothers Keith Plant (Patsy) of Concho, AZ, EJ Plant (Julie), of Gilbert, AZ.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 9th, 2024 at the Estancia Church of Christ at 1:00 p.m with Pastor, Johnny Moore to Officiate. Reception to follow.
