Kenneth Dewayne "Heavy" Sursa, age 68, of Bluebell, passed away December 10, 2023, at the Uintah Basin Medical Center.
He was born July 26, 1955, in Borger, Texas, to Jack Franklin &
Dorothy Christine Stroud Sursa. He is the second of three boys and grew
up in the panhandle of Texas with his siblings and parents. They lived
and moved to three different places.
When he was a little guy,
his dad called him his "Little Heavy" and that name stuck for 60+ years.
Most people didn't even know his given name. Heavy had an 8th grade
education but was a brilliant man. He could calculate math in his head
as quick as a calculator. He had a hilarious sense of humor and a loving
but direct attitude toward all people. He was a very generous and
gracious man.
Heavy married Karen Cowan at the age of 15 and had
two children Sammi & Brandi. They later divorced. He married Patsy
McKowen in 2003 and they have lived and been very happy together in
bluebell for 20 years.
Heavy had a 52 year career in the
oilfield. He was the hardest worker there ever was. Even though the
oilfield had its ups and downs through the years, Heavy said he never
missed a paycheck. That's a telling testament of his hard work ethic. He
lived what he taught and has been a mentor to many along the way. He
has owned and operated many businesses all pertaining to his oilfield
work and all successful. He was a very patriotic man, he loved his
country and his flag. He was always willing and happy to be a part of
anything to do with the community and the celebrations for our country.
Heavy loved being a cowboy! He loved all the people he met, and every
aspect of the cowboy life. He loved how patriotic the rodeo life is,
the prayers, the friendships and all the memories he made. If you seen
Heavy at a roping event, you would see his best traveling partner/baby
girl right by his side!! The bond they had was something else!!
After Heavy retired, he enjoyed watching his grandkids excel in sports,
he was always their biggest fan!! And always the loudest cheer leader!!
He is survived by his beloved wife Patsy, of Bluebell; his children,
Sammi (Matt) Fillingim, Myton; Brandi (Cleveland) Murray, Cedarview;
step-children, Ryan (Jessica) Christensen, Lapoint; Cori (Josh) Hutson,
South Carolina; Derek Christensen, Roosevelt; grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and treasured friends.
He was welcomed in heaven by his parents, Jack and Dorothy, brothers
Frank and Ronnie, step-daughter-in-law, Heather Christensen, and many
other family members.
