The Ariat #12.5 WSTR Finale XV paid a total $1.5 million to ropers.
It was Copie Dickson, a pharmacist from Stamps, Arkansas, and Shane McCall, a
fence builder and metal building contractor from Avery, Texas, who took home
the lion's share. With a time of 29.66 on four head, they finished almost a
full second ahead of second place and will return home $228,000 the richer.
"I don't get to rope much anymore," said Dickson, who owns
Peoples Drug and Gift in Stamps. "It's a small town of about 2,000. We've been
giving COVID shots and antibodies these last 12 to 14 months. With two kids in
college, sometimes you just have to stop and make a living."
When Dickson finally found a little time to sneak away to a jackpot
this year, McCall was the producer and jumped at the opportunity to urge him
into a Vegas trip.
"He asked me to rope out here and I told him no," Dickson
said. "I didn't think I needed to be going anywhere. But I thought about it
some more and decided I'm getting old, so I better go while I can."
Dickson is no stranger to the winners' circle, having
finished third in the #13.5 Finale in 2016 with Daniel Barton, worth $69,000.
"When you rope like I do you can't say, 'I'm going to go and
be a 6 or 7.' I don't rope that good. I can go do what I do, though," Dickson
said. "That's all I concentrate on when I get to the short round in something
where it's got money in it. Just go do what you do and see where that places."
Dickson was riding Radar, the same horse he rode to the 2016
win.
"If he doesn't go, I don't go," Dickson added.
McCall was aboard a sorrel mare he calls Sophie, that came
from Mike White of DeKalb, Texas.
"It was pretty smooth for the most part," McCall said of
their draws. "Our second one checked off. He went hard to the right and pinched
me off on the fence. I kind of went by him and just lucked out and got him by
two feet. I roped a leg yesterday in that Heartland to be first or second back
for another guy and I was just thinking, 'Don't rope a leg again.'"
"In getting my horse over here and riding around outside, I
thought it's amazing to me that you can put on something like this and have so
many people show up from across the nation at one time to do this," Dickson
finished. "Who would have thought?"
