Finale V (2010)

riefert #11 Amateur Finale

The final ten teams that roped in the Priefert World Series Amateur Finale provided some of the most exciting action of the Grand Finale. A single second separated the last five teams to rope. With many of the teams in the final round catching, it appeared a photo finish might be necessary. The 3rd callback team comprised of Malachi Peterson-Stohl, Kodiak, Alaska and Scott Hutchins, San Miguel, CA, made a solid run that held against the second callback and when the high-call team slipped a leg the victory was all theirs.

This wasn’t the first World Series money won by either partner. In 2008 Scott placed 10th in this same division and won $10,000 with a different partner. Malachi won $70,000 last year with another partner in the Lo-Am Division for a second place finish. Immediately following the 2009 event Malachi received a handicap increase and simply moved up in class to claim his second major check in a WSTR event. This according to Hutchins proves “you don’t have to be tall to win,” (both Hutchins and Stohl top out around 5’6”).

Malachi Peterson-Stohl is a college student at Cal-Poly and had linked up with local businessman Scott Hutchins at local jackpots in the San Luis Obispo area. Scott chuckled that the two did not practice together prior to the event. Malachi began roping in a small building in Kodiak, Alaska and came to California a few years later to “learn” all over in a correct way. He credits the horse he borrowed from Ronye Garcia the last two years for much of his success. Malachi would not admit to any nerves during the final round, saying, “making the short round to me is much harder than roping that last steer.”

Scott Hutchins is a partner in Pearce Services Inc., a nationwide utility construction service company based in central California. The success of his company gives him a little different perspective concerning the money aspect of the World Series of Team Roping. He stated after the award ceremony that “the money itself puts great pressure on most these competitors. The money doesn’t have that effect on me, it is more about the experience of the pressure, the rush and getting to experience a little of what the PRCA competitors feel at the National Finals.” Hutchins said that, “it is also gratifying to be able to win on a horse that we bred and raised. We have a little herd and I have raised 6 full brothers to this horse.”
