Finale V (2010)

Cactus Saddlery #13 Pro-AM WSTR Finale

Occasionally an aberration will occur in team roping and that is exactly what happened in #13 Finale with 100 of the 300 teams entered making it to the four steer short round. According to the ropers it was just a sweet, sweet set up---nearly perfect cattle, WSTR barrier, and perfect ground.

When the final steer was roped, first place and second place found their way to the front of the pack from completely different directions. Throughout the afternoon Brad Amos, Sulphur Springs, AR and Blake Larmon, Jay, OK, led the pack and entered the short round in the first call back position. Their 7.88, 8.07,6.83, and then 7.92 in the short round was enough to lead wire to wire and throw them into a mad victory dash around the South Point Arena.

The story of the day was how the friends and partners of 13 years, Amos and Larmon found their way to Vegas and the championship. Hearing of the huge World Series payouts, the pair set out to make Las Vegas a goal, and the Heartland Finale was the first test. Amos said, “It was a disaster. I missed the very first steer.” The pair decided to change ends and give it a try the other way. At that point the blessings began. With the ends switched up, the partners instantly started seeing success. They won the roping in Clarksville, Arkansas, which qualified them for the WSTR Finale. Amos got second in the Gold Plus roping at the USTRC finals and the trip to Vegas was a “no-brainer.”

Larmon, an auctioneer from Jay, Oklahoma, was the header of the pair, had a big win with USTRC in 2009 and came to Vegas for a chance to get a big win again. Blake Larmon described this win at the WSTR Finales as “unbelievable.” He said, “I don’t know for sure if I believe it yet or not, but it is definitely life changing.”

Amos, a farmer who works with his father, had very few wins to brag about. He credits his great fortune over the last few months to God. He said “I hit some tough times recently with a divorce.” This money will “get things really turned back around in the positive direction for me and my two baby girls.”

Concerning his mount, Brad Amos confessed to having a “love- hate” relationship with his horse. Amos said that, “I’ve never really got along well with this horse, and I have been trying to sell him for a while even though it has been working out lately.” With that said the horse seemed to be showing off a little as the victory lap was “probably the best thing he’s ever done. He likes to go really fast.”
