Byron Wilkerson 1962-2017
Wordy Byron Wilkerson, age 54, passed away peacefully the morning of Sunday, May 28, 2017 surrounded by the ones who loved him most. Born in Morenci, Arizona, August 9, 1962 to William Gordon and Carol (Shelley) Wilkerson at 11 lbs. 2 oz. and 21.5 inches. Byron graduated from Duncan High School in 1980 and attended Cochise Community College and New Mexico State University on rodeo scholarships.
A champion team roper and member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association since 1986, Byron was a man of many talents in and out of the arena. When Byron wasn’t on the rodeo road he spent his time training horses, playing golf, giving roping lessons or working as an actor and stunt man in the film industry. Byron was a friend to everyone he met, often the story is told that he couldn’t go anywhere without someone knowing who he was. He was known for his infectious laugh, cracking jokes, a stern “bear paw” handshake and a smile that shined brighter than any gold buckle.
Byron was a loving husband and father. He is preceded in death by his father Gordon and survived by his wife Leanne, mother Carol Carrell, daughter Megan (Aaron), son Clancy (Robin), daughter Carol (Kenny), sister Daphene (Robert), brother Keith (Leah), nephew Josh (Dodie), nephew Latigo (Jessica), great nephews Joshua and Logan, great niece Tayah. He is also survived by and most proud of his four grandsons Jet, Owen, Hayes and Kenneth.
Byron will be greatly missed, for he was the best at what he did and his legend will live on through his loving family and the countless people whose lives he touched. A celebration of life will by held June 10, 2017 at 10am at the Greenlee County Fairgrounds in Duncan, Arizona, 1248 Fairgrounds Rd Duncan, AZ 85534. Potluck to follow.
